JUNO - Completed Cartography
All right. We made it you guys. It’s been three weeks but we will end today’s session with a final complete map of the world.
So we left off with a map that had it’s terrain figured out and banded on the land. We added in our mountains and hills and elevating elements according to our elevation heat map. So today we are going to clean up those terrain colorings, and then add some vegetation.
Blending the terrains is easy cause we are using Wonderdraft. I lean heavily on this tutorial series on YouTube. And even after getting a lot of maps under my belt I’ve still got a lot to go. But for now if you are looking for how to make a map I would check out the video below:
So now that we have our terrain sorted out we need our last element which is some vegetation. This is also where I have some gaps in my knowledge of how planets work. I do know that, for instance, forest/jungles tend to only grow on one side of a mountain range. Mountains tend to block water and weather getting across them leaving a bunch of water and life on one side and then less so on the other side. Plant growth follows water sources. So another video tutorial for map making that I used a lot making this offers a bunch other ideas and was the place where I learned about Tectonics.js So here’s that if you are even more interested in learning how to make maps for whatever you need maps for:
But the final rule is where I end up for putting the finishing touches on the map. Break all the rules. So after I put in the vegetation around the world where it should be, I also put it all around to kind of flesh out the world. I didn’t want any where to look empty and also not to busy. And I’m still kind of trying to figure out what looks good. So as we continue to build out the world I’ll probably be working on making the map look better. I’ve also put in a volcano on an island and added a couple spots that look like meteor impacts, just for fun.
Also, keep in mind this map doesn’t have anyone living in it yet. So we have space here for our sentient race(s) to come in and have an effect on the world. Right now this is kind of JUNO year one. Which is good as we haven’t done anything more then create the terrain. The more we learn about the world the more this map can change and improve, but also incorporate the other world building things that we all come up with. We can also zoom way in and make more maps for specific areas that add more detail.
So with all that said, here’s the final version of JUNO!
